Virtual Augmented Sandbox
Main Content
SIU has two Virtual Sandboxes that are for K-12 grade demonstrations to help display geologic features and concepts. This is possible through the use of an XBOX 360 Konnect and an Open Source program. Where the infrared light of the Konnect determines the height of the sand and applies arbitrary contour lines based on the elevation of the sand. As students engage with the Virtual Sandbox, the display image on the sand will change to the current "land formations". We can even display puzzle maps of Mount St. Helens to physically show before and after images of the 1980 eruption.
